LS Swap Suspension Guide: Everything You Need for a Perfect Build

LS Swap Suspension Guide: Everything You Need for a Perfect Build

Dropping an LS engine into a classic car or muscle car is one of the most rewarding automotive projects — but the engine is only half the story. Getting the suspension right is what transforms a project car into a truly great driving machine.

Why Suspension Matters in an LS Swap

An LS engine produces significantly more power and torque than the original engine in most classic vehicles. A first-gen Camaro with a stock suspension and a 500 HP LS3 is genuinely dangerous — the car simply wasn’t engineered for that power level. Upgrading the suspension ensures the car can put the power down, stop effectively, and handle predictably.

Key Suspension Components for LS Swaps

Control Arms: Tubular upper and lower control arms dramatically improve geometry and allow proper caster and camber adjustment for classic GM A-body cars (Chevelle, El Camino, Malibu).

Coilover Conversion Kits: Replacing stock springs and shock absorbers with a coilover system allows ride height adjustment and dramatically improves handling. QA1 and Hotchkis are two brands we stock that deliver excellent results.

Sway Bars: A larger front sway bar reduces body roll — essential when adding 200+ HP over the original engine. Hotchkis Sport Suspension Stage 2 TVS Systems include front and rear sway bars as part of the complete package.

Rack and Pinion Steering: Swapping from a recirculating ball steering box to a rack and pinion completely transforms the steering feel of classic cars. Flaming River makes excellent power rack and pinion kits for 1965–70 Mustangs that bolt in cleanly.

Transmission Considerations

A 500 HP LS engine needs a transmission rated for the power. We stock the Tremec T56 6-speed and TKX 5-speed — both capable of handling serious power levels with LS engines.
